April 2015 Book Club- Getting to Yes
If you missed book club here are some tips from the book we discussed
4 key points of negotiation -
1. Separate the people from the Problem
2. Focus on interests, not positions
3. Invent options for mutual gain
4. Insist on using objective criteria
Go To The Balcony
Understanding the other persons point of view is not the same as agreeing with it. It allows you to reduce the area of conflict.
How do I move from inventing options to making commitments?

Go To The Balcony
- stop to think
- look: keep your eyes on the prize
- identify the stakeholders
- listen to yourself - reactions, emotions
Understanding the other persons point of view is not the same as agreeing with it. It allows you to reduce the area of conflict.
How do I move from inventing options to making commitments?
- Think about closure from the beginning
- Consider crafting a framework agreement
- Be persistent in pursuing your interests but not rigid in pursuing any particular solution
- Make an offer
- Be generous at the end
- Do not deduce their intentions from your fears. People tend to assume that whatever they fear, the other side intends to do.
- Consider the role of identity. A sure fire driver of strong negative emotion is a perceived threat to identity - one's self-image or self-respect.
- No one is perfect or entirely consistent about anything, but unconsciously that can be painful and uncomfortable to accept.
- Focus on interests, not positions. How do you identify interests?
- ask "why?"
- ask "why not?" Think about their choice
- realize that each side has multiple interests
- the most powerful interests are basic human needs
- make a list
- How do I decide things such as Where should we meet? Or How should I communicate? Or Who should make the first offer?
Engineering Week 2015 Workshop at Dommerich Elementary School
The Central Florida Professional Section of the Society of Woman Engineers (CFL SWE) and General Dynamics Mission System hosted an event on February 25, 2015 at Dommerich Elementary School in Maitland, Florida
The event focused on celebrating Engineering Week 2015 by introducing Elementary school students to engineering through hands on activity. This event also aligned with SWE’s outreach priority to inspire young females and encourage them to enter the engineering workforce by including hands-on engineering workshops that were led by professional female engineers.
The event concluded with a question “who wants to be an engineer?” We are pleased to say that many hands went up. Many thanks to our sponsor General Dynamics Mission Systems and Dommerich Elementary School STEM Facilitator (Megan Baptist) and all volunteers from Central Florida SWE and General Dynamics Mission Systems office in Orlando, Florida: Juliet Preston, Rowland Darbin, Atoosa Vaziri, Simonetta O’Riordan-Adjah, Megan Baptist, and Dan Gardener and Raymond Wade.
